TANGS Top Ten Romantic Movies

What better way to spend your Valentine's Day than to cozy up with your loved ones to watch a movie at the comfort of your home? Grab some popcorn and get ready to fall in love all over again with these Top 10 romantic movies of all time voted by our Facebook fans!


1) The Notebook
The Notebook is a 1996 romantic novel by American Novelist Nicholas Sparks , based on a true story. The story revolves around two young lovers - Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams) who met again and fell in love after a 7-year seperation, but was subsequently seperated by their social differences. Allie has to choose between Noah, and her then fiancé, Lon.

 

2) Ghost
Ghost is a 1990 American romantic movie starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore. It was written by Bruce Joel Rubin and directed by Jerry Zucker. Sam (Patrick Swayze) was murdered by a thief one night while he and Molly (Demi Moore) were walking back to their new apartment after a night out at the theatre. He finds himself trapped as a ghost and realises that his death was no accident. Seperated by death, he tries ways and means to warn Molly about the danger she is in, and tries to protect her in his own way.

 

3) 50 First Dates
50 First Dates is a 2004 American romantic comedy movie directed by Peter Segal and written by George Wing. Henry Roth (Adam Sandler) is a man afraid of commitment until he meets the beautiful Lucy (Drew Barrymore). They hit it off and Henry think he's finally found the girl of his dreams, until he discovers she has short-term memory loss and forgets him the very next day. Henry won't let this stop him and is prepared to make her fall in love with him all over again, each and every day. A lighthearted comedy and romantic movie no doubt.

 

4) Pretty Woman
Pretty Woman is a 1990 romantic comedy movie set in Los Angeles, California and written by J.F. Lawton and directed by Garry Marshall. The story of Pretty Woman centers on the down-on-her-luck Hollywood prostitute Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) who is hired by a wealthy businessman, Edward Lewis (Richard Gere), to be his escort for several business and social functions. Edward falls in love with Vivian and has to convince her to stay with him for love and not for his money.

 

5) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Winner of the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a 2004 American romantic science fiction film scripted by Charlie Kaufman and directed by the French director, Michel Gondry. The show is about an estranged couple- Joel Barish (Jim Carrey)  and  Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) who have each other erased from their memories after a nasty fight. But it is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with.

  

6) The Reader
Another of Kate Winslet's film, The Reader is a 2008 drama film based on the 1995 German novel of the same name by Bernhard Schlink. The film was written by David Hare and directed by Stephen Daldry. Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet start along with the young actor David Kross. The Reader is a story about truth and reconciliation. The story opens in post-war Germany when teenager Michael Berg (Ralph Fiennes) becomes ill and is helped home by Hanna (Kate Winslet), a stranger twice his age. Michael recovers and seeks out Hanna to thank her. The two are quickly drawn into a passionate but secretive affair. Despite their intense bond, Hanna mysteriously disappears one day and Michael is left confused and heartbroken. Eight years later, Michael met Hanna again and he uncovers a deep secret that will impact both of their lives.

 

7) Definitely, Maybe
Definitely, Maybe is a 2008 romantic comedy film directed by Adam Brooks and starring Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher, Rachel Weisz, Elizabeth Banks, Abigail Breslin and Kevin Kline. Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds), a 38-year-old father who is in the midst of a divorce shares his love story with his 10-year-old daughter Maya (Abigail Breslin) after she insisted on hearing the story of how her parents met. Through the story, Will realizes who he truly loves and he decided to pursue her again with Maya's help. 

 

8) Twilight Saga
With so many fans going gaga over this movie, it's no wonder the Twilight Saga had been voted as our Top Ten romantic film. If you do not know, The Twilight Saga is a series of five supernatural romance film  based on the four Twilight series novels by the American author, Stephenie Meyer. The films star Kirsten Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner. Spend the whole night catching the four installment of the Twilight Saga - Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn and revel in the love between a human and a vampire. 

 

9) What's Your Number
What's your Number is a 2011 romantic comedy film starring Anna Faris and Chris Evans. It is based on Karyn Bosnak's book 20 Times a Lady. On her way home after losing her job, Ally Darling (Anna Faris) came across a magazine article titled "What's Your Number?", which asks the reader to calculate how many people she has slept with. Realizing that her number is double the average, Ally decides to track down all of her ex-boyfriends in the hope that one of them will have grown into the man she wants to marry, and therefore the number of men she has slept with will never have to increase. With the help of her womanizing neighbor Colin Shea (Chris Evans), she manages to find all of her exes, but things do not quite work out the way she had expected.


10) Titanic

Last but not least, our last Top Ten movie is the all-time favourite box office show by James Cameron- Titanic. Starring Leonardo Di Caprio as Jack Dawson, Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater, Gloria Stuart as Old Rose, and Billy Zane as Rose's fiancé, Titanic is a 1997 American epic romance and disaster film that shows a fictionalized account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic while telling the heart wrenching love story between Jack and Rose, who fell in love and are seperated by their difference in social classes aboard the ship during its ill-fated maiden voyage. Also catch the film in the theatre this April 2012 as it's re-released in 3-D to commemorate the centenary of Titanic setting sail on 10 April, 1912!
