TANGS Top Ten: Leica, Mika and Nooka

POSTED 13.10.2009 BY TANGS EDITORIAL TEAM

TANGS eclectic Top Ten List of trends, things and pop culture musings.

1. NOOKA WATCHES

New York-based fashion label, Nooka, has gained the majority of their acclaim and street cred through their innovative and revolutionary chronograph designs. Spearheaded by the respectable Matthew Waldman, this Fall, Nooka unveils their newest wrist-candy and dial design on an array of colours and materials like leather and mesh straps. Go cop your favourites at TANGS Playlab now.

2. LEICA M9

Since the launch of the Leica I (otherwise known as the first practical 35mm camera), industry-types have always prided this German camera company as the King of Rangefinders. First building its iconic brand status in the early 19th century, today, Leica cameras are a must-have for any photographers willing to break the bank. To keep up with digital times, Leica recently released its latest and most-anticipated offering yet: the Leica M9, a 18.5 megapixel full-framed digital camera (a first from the M series). We are not worthy.

3) ANGER MANAGEMENT

The notorious Kanye West has struck again – and we aren’t talking about his long spit of rhymes or chart-topping antics. Rather, his unruly behaviour at this year’s VMA awards. Tsk tsk. And ‘though the rapper has since made a million and one apologies (on his blog and other mediums) to the reasonably mortified Taylor Swift for his rude verbal outburst, we still strongly suggest he keeps his ego, temper and opinions intact.

4) MIKA – THE BOY WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Offered in the form of a 2-disc, colourful and masterfully designed album (art) is Mika’s sophomore release, The Boy Who Knew Too Much. Released late this September, the 30-track album is one sonic sound-kerchief that takes a dramatic yet brilliant shift when compared to its predecessor. So, unless your pop-loving self is ready for schizophrenic compositions laced with unadulterated lyrical charm, sophisticated piano chords and a sporadic sprinkling of strings all mixed together Gospel choir style, this one’s definitely not for the faint of heart.

5) M.A.C. STYLE BLACK COLLECTION

New from the beauty counters of M.A.C. is the Style Black collection. A very punk/rock/goth attempt to bring sexy black, erm, we meant back, creative artists behind Canada’s leading cosmetic brand recently launched yet another dazzling range of face paint to join their family of limited edition stuff. Complementing the melancholia of Fall, items that are getting thunderous reception from runway stalwarts are their Lipstick in Black Knight, Glimmerglass in Blackware, Nail Lacquer in Nocturnelle and the Volcanic Ash Exfoliator.

6) TUNES TO DIE FOR

It’s time to trick-or-treat, but instead of dressing up like ghouls, you’d rather scare and scar your fiends with an onslaught of trashy Euro bubblegum dance tunes that were so disgustingly famous in the early ‘90s. Often more stuck than tongue-in-cheek, here we aid you in your scare tactics with our most frightening picks: Lolly – “Viva La Radio”, Toy Box – “Tarzan & Jane”, Miss Papaya – “Operator”, Cheeky Girls – “Cheeky Song (touch my bum)”, and Dr. Bombay “Calcutta (Taxi Taxi Taxi).

7) STARSTUDDED “IT” BAGS

While borrowing the shinning status of an A-lister to endorse a luxury fashion brand’s hardly an anomaly these days, some have gone a step further by naming the latest “it” bags after their favourites. An homage paid to their favourite icons (some almost-famous), already in the list is the Gucci Jackie (Kennedy) bag, the Hermès (Grace) Kelly and (Jane) Birkin bag, the Marc Jacobs BB (Bryanboy) bag, and the most recent, the Mulberry Alexa (Chung) bag

8) THE BEATLES: ROCK BAND

Kick up a raucous in your Star Wars-inspired bedroom to the latest offering from Harmonix Music Systems. Already made available for play on your PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 consoles, The Beatles: Rock Band features over 45 of our favourite songs made popular by the world’s most revered and loved Britons. Ostensibly the highest grossing game in the history of Rock Band, gather your best mates and rock it out like (Hey) Jude and Lucy (In The Sky With Diamonds).

9) EASTWICK

Move over Fangers as new on the paranormal block is Eastwick, a new television series spun out by the folks over at ABC. Rightfully adapted from the 1987 movie, The Witches of Eastwick, this one’s about three beautiful strangers – played by Rebecca Romijn (X-Men), Lindsay Price (Lipstick Jungle) and Jaime Ray Newman (Turnaround) – who finds common ground after a brief but weird occurrence at their town’s wishing fountain. But aside from the expected supernatural stuff, this hour-long show is also filled with big twists and turns. Sexier than Cashmere Mafia, and more spellbinding than Charmed, watch the trio as they embark on their new life filled with witchery, scandal and danger.

10) CARTOON ROYALTY

Bringing birth to a new kind of humour that’s altogether satire, controversial and – occasionally – derogatory is Seth MacFarlane’s contributions to network air-time. With three prevailing animated sitcoms (The Family Guy, American Dad! and the most recent, The Cleveland Show) firmly knuckled down on his tool belt, Seth’s countless accolades have reigned him the new King of Comedy. And while these cartoons are often loved by those past their pubescent years, these are not one for child-sharing.
