TANGS Top Ten: APEC, Gaga and Windows 7

POSTED 30.11.2009 BY TANGS EDITORIAL TEAM

TANGS eclectic Top Ten List of trends, things and pop culture musings.

1. WINDOWS 7

Those of you still baying for Vista blood, it’s time to put down the weapons and call off the hounds. Launching globally in late October to seriously positive reviews from the experts at CNET, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and more, this baby holds the record at Amazon.com for the highest grossing pre-order ever, bumping the seventh Harry Potter book off the #1 spot. We could go on and on about why we think Windows 7 is the bomb – higher speeds, power-saving features, better compatibility and more usability – but we’ll leave you to find out more for yourself from www.yourpcsimplified.com. Check it out, you don’t just have to take Microsoft’s word for it (heck, you don’t even have to take OUR word for it), just take a look at the site’s user reviews, forum-linked content and see it for yourself.

2. THE FUN THEORY

Picture this – it’s 8.55am on a Monday morning, you step out of your long and frustratingly cramped train ride and head towards the escalators to wait your turn, even though you know you’re running late for that all-important meeting and you know you’ll have to face the boss’s wrath. Why not take the stairs? And, apparently, we’re not the only ones asking this question. The folks at The Fun Theory (www.thefuntheory.com) are too. And so was born a site, nay, a MOVEMENT dedicated to making simple, everyday actions more fun, in order to change people’s behaviour for the better. Examples of this Volkswagen initiative? Turning a staircase into a giant keyboard complete with accurately-tuned sound so you can play a tune on the stairs, installing motion-triggered sounds into dustbins to make it sound like the world’s deepest dustbin, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination. Even better, you get a chance to be part of this movement. Make your contribution to The Fun Theory (details on the site) by 15 Dec ’09 (Tue) and you could win a nice cash prize for yourself.

3) APEC SINGAPORE 2009

The Asia-Pacific Economic Corporation (APEC) 2009 meetings were concluded with the APEC Leaders Week in mid-November. Unofficially, the highlight of this summit just has to be Barack Obama’s Asian debut and his appearance, however brief, on our little red dot of a country. President Obama’s Air Force One landed at the Paya Lebar military airbase late on 14 Nov ’09 (Sat), just in time to participate in a gala evening for the leaders, and of course, the mandatory group photo session, before participating in meetings for most of 15 Nov ’09 (Sun). Check out www.apec2009.sg to see pix of him next to PM Lee, togged out in a Peranakan-inspired outfit by local designer Wykidd Song. Apart from that, we’ll leave the musings on the political, social and economic impact of his presence and the entire summit to the analyst in you. For now, we just can’t help but giggle at the thought of a sombre Secret Service agent mumbling into his commset, “POTUS has reached the red dot.” We know, we know, one too many reruns of The West Wing. We confess.

4) POWERMATTM

How many devices do you carry with you on a daily basis? At least two or three? A mobile phone, a music player, a digital camera, a gaming device, a hybrid of all or any of the above? This means you have as many chargers. And herein lies the true magic of the Powermat. Wireless charging anywhere, no cords, no adapters. It’s literally a MAT, and you can put up to 3 devices on it to charge at the same time, whether you’re at home or on the go. Find out more at www.powermat.com. Sadly, the range isn’t available in Singapore yet (and the online store only ships within the USA), but we glad to report that we have spoken to the powers that be and they’re researching this as we speak. Now we wait.

5) ILOVEMOVIES.COM.SG

Genius. Pure genius. InSing.com needs a movie reviewer, and rather than put out a boring old want ad, what do they do? They set up a microsite, ilovemovies.com.sg, to aid them in their search for a true-blue movie lover to sign on with them. Up for grabs (other than a really cool job) are your very own Macbook, movie tickets, a monthly movie allowance and your very own web column! So, what does one need to do to secure this very cool job? Well, you could get the details yourself, but here’s some help from us. Basically, all you need to do is register on
InSing.com, fill out an application form, answer some questions and write a sample review. Easy peasy. But, before you go charging into this, there ARE requirements. As per the microsite, you must:

A) Be objective. This means you cannot love a movie simply because Johnny Depp is in it.
B) Speak and write good English. This means, no matter how much you love Jack Neo movies, you
    cannot sound like them.
C) Have a strong interest in all kinds of movies. This means you cannot close your eyes when you know
the ghost/monster/serial killer is just about to jump out from SOMEWHERE and scare everyone to
    bits.

Still interested? Well then, GO FOR IT! Applications must be sent in by 30 Nov ’09 (Mon).

6) CHRISTMAS LIGHT UP

It’s that time of the year again, when all of Orchard Road as well as other parts of the country transform into a magically lit wonderland, with Christmas trees around every corner, fairy lights dripping from every tree, Christmas carols playing from every speaker, and you’ll even see the odd faux-snowfall or two. Who cares if it’s November and not quite December? You can hardly blame one for wanting to get a head start on the holidays. We’ve already seen the hordes on the streets with their cameras in tow, snapping their holiday moments at almost every decoration they can possibly find.

And, we know this is shameless, but indulge us, we really, really can’t help ourselves – we’re completely in LOVE with our Art Deco theme this year. All that black and gold, swirling filigree patterns and chandeliers! If you love it as much as we do, vote for us to win the Best Dressed Building Contest in the Orchard Road Great Dress Up. It’s the first time this contest has returned since being discontinued in 2002. Voting is via SMS, learn how to cast your vote at this link: http://www.orchardroad.sg/christmas/building.html.

7) BRAD PITT AND ANGELINA JOLIE FOR ASPREY

Okay, it’s official. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have officially acquired superhuman status. Somehow, someway, while juggling dual Hollywood A-lister careers, raising a family with a bajillion children (who’s counting anymore??) and traipsing around the world for work and charity, they’ve managed to design a baby-item and jewellery line for British luxury goods specialists, Asprey. The collection is named “The Protector”, and all items incorporate a snake design based on a ring Angelina wore while she was pregnant with Shiloh, looking upon the ring as a talisman of sorts. And lest you think this is all for monetary gain, all profits go to the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, a charity set up by Angelina Jolie herself. And just what do we think of this collection? That’s irrelevant. Because if you can afford a baby spoon that costs $525, you can damn well afford not to care what anyone thinks.

8) THE ARMADILLO BY ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

Very seldom does any new product manage to truly stagger the jaded, seen-it-all fashion crowd these days. And yet, these new shoes have managed to do exactly that. Never mind the stratospheric 12-inch height gain it gives you, this shoe is referred to as “The Armadillo” because it looks like, well, an armadillo. Although we have heard a couple of comparisons to a lobster claw (acks, can it get any more unflattering?!). We’ll reserve our judgment as to whether this sinks a la Lilo’s little Ungaro outing or leaves the world going gaga for more. And, speaking of gaga, guess which popstar’s music video gives you a glimpse of The Armadillo?

9)
RA-RA AH-AH-AH-AH, RO-MA RO-MA-MA-AH, GA-GA OOH-LA-LA…

No, a legion of chipmunks has not been unleashed on our keyboards. The line above is the annoyingly catchy line from Lady Gaga’s latest single, Bad Romance. The pop princess keeps her inimitable blend of music, froth and fashion in her latest musical offering and its accompanying music video, seen here at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACm9yECwSso. Keep your eyes peeled for a glimpse of The Armadillo, what we think is a teensy tribute to Michael Jackson’s infamous Thriller dance move, Gaga herself as a strawberry blonde Blythe doll, and as a teary-eyed blonde that looks freakishly like a young Cher. The bonus? The awesome plotline: she’s kidnapped by evil supermodels and auctioned off to unrealistically handsome mafia dudes. Don’t we all wish our lives were like that? Sing it with us now - RA-RA AH-AH-AH-AH, RO-MA RO-MA-MA-AH, GA-GA OOH-LA-LA…I WANT YOUR LOVE…

10) AS SEEN ON AUDREY HEPBURN / VINTAGE GIVENCHY

Whoa. How often do you get a chance to own genuine, vintage Givenchy? And then, how often do you get a chance to own something actually worn by Audrey Hepburn? And now we’re being given a chance to actually own BOTH? That’s almost way too much for the greedy child in all of us. Come early December, 36 items actually worn by the princess of understated elegance herself (including 2 Givenchy dresses) will be auctioned to benefit All Children in School, a foundation supported by the Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund aimed at educating children all over the world. So, to quote Fashionista.com, “if you’ve got a miniature waist and a not-miniature wallet”, head on over to Kerry Taylor auctions in London to get yourself a piece of this action now.
